Outside or Inside?

Luke 15:25-28
The parable of the prodigal son, accepted back home.
The audience for this story included tax collectors and sinners who drew near to hear. Pharisees and scribes were also listening, concerned about this teacher that would talk this way to sinners and even eat with them. Pharisees and scribes knew they were insiders. Tax collectors and sinners were outsiders. (Luke 15:1,2)
In this parable, the father received the prodigal son with joy and thanksgiving. He brings him back inside their family circle to celebrate his return.
The brother who stayed home had always been an insider and followed his father's instructions. He is very upset to find what his father has done for this wayward son. He sees his wayward brother as an outsider now. He is angry and does not want to join the party for his brother. He has never been treated in such a special way. He has always followed all the rules. He now stays outside. His father comes out to him and explains why this day deserves a celebration. His father pleads with him.
Do we ever have resentment for what others have or how they are treated?
When we reject God, He will always makes the first move to accept us back. Do we want to come back? Are we an insider or outsider? God wants us to be an "insider" and welcome "outsiders".
God invites us over an over again.
Reflect on the two thieves hanging on the cross along with Jesus. They both consider Jesus an outsider. Jesus considers them insiders. One rejects Jesus outright. The second in a moment changes, and becomes an insider with Jesus. Everything God offers us in life is positive.
Notice the parable of the prodigal son does not tell us if the faithful brother comes inside. Perhaps this story ending belongs to the audience.
Do you want to be inside or outside? Do you feel there are those who need to stay outside? Consider your relationship with God.
Do you think like a Pharisee concerned about those that welcome sinners and eat with them?
Do you think like the father who treats outsiders with kindness, welcoming them inside?
